Ok, I'll admit I am not a completely open-minded guy.So with the "revolution" coming I was cautiously pessimeistic. Now I see how well-founded my bad feelings were.
The game has never been perfect, admittedly, and in my opinion the last couple pre-Revo sets weren't helping the cause. "Bash" is a sickeningly good dynamic that if you can't build a strong Bash deck---you're a moron. Not a fan of the "cheater/fan fave" either...just something else to keep track of <i.e. Raw/SD, face/heel, etc.>ESPECIALLY when SS specific cards were cheater/fave...forcing you to play someone one way or the other <or not play the cards, duh>. There has always been a few other things in the game that have bothered me, mostly involving reversals & how they play, including the fact that if I play a Sub move as a reversal, I should be able to maintain it. <Ex. I reverse a figure 4 with an Indian Deathlock, I should be able to maintain, in a real match, I'm not going to hit the Deathlock to get out of the move & then let you out just because>. But that game had steadily gotten better over the years, and with such a huge card base, you could come up with millions of ways to play anyone--chain Hogan, stall Kane, the list is endless....
ENTER REVOLUTION>>>>
First, take 4 starter decks, 4 storylines, & 4 Extremists in the first set. Ok, you can play 1 of 12 ways. The decks are froced to be built solely in accordance to the SS ability, so any Cena deck will pretty much be the same...unless its a dr of Thug deck, which will then be like any other Dr deck. So as soon as your opponent flips his SS & then either does or doesn't the storyline, you know EXACTLY what you are facing. Remember how in Pac-Man the maze never changed & Space Invaders they always attacked in the same format.......?
Second, the whole moves as reversal format. I wanted to like this. Who doesn't like moves that double as reversals? But the sorry fact that you are stuck packing moves to reverse other moves so you can't pack too many cards to help your SS ability <ex. abilities that kick off of throws, assaults, whatever.> because you have to NOT GET HIT! So with the 3 new moves, we have been sold a dolled-up version of "rock, paper, scissors"....LITERALLY!! And you have to worry so much about what you have to reverse that you no longer see anything as a move, but what it is.."Throw:Core" YAWN!
Third, I thought I'd like the aggro rule of playing manuevers, EXCEPT that MAKES you play a manuever as your first card every time...if you play an antic first & it gets reversed...mill 6 cards.
So not only are we being told how our deck is constructed, we are being told how to play each turn. The fun of Raw Deal was you could take real people you know <the wrestlers> and make them fight how you want, or do things they never could---make Andre throw a shooting star press---make Eugene do Nidia's "special Kiss'---make Christy beat Evolution in a Hell in a Cell Inferno match.
Now we just get a faster game------roller coasters & convertibles are more fun the faster they are.....card games should just get better.
I hope that following the already planned Revo 2 & 3 they give it up. As manager of my area, we play All Axxes PRE-REVO. The revo cards are too good to mix back (if you doubt this, just read HHH's 2 Backlash cards & imagine them in a DX deck>
20 sets to make a truly fun game---1 set to F it all up!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Don't even get me started about the superstar selection for revo, or more importantly, the fact that prior superstars are not getting any specific support.
Holla if ya hear me.......
