Saw this movie on the Friday it came out, and I can tell ya that it was an awesome ride. I was with a few friends (JSD included) and we all really liked the movie. It had action, comedy, drama and, of course, sci-fi special effects.
This movie is actually based on the short lived, 11-episode series Firefly, written and directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel). The movie actually uses the same characters as in the TV series and this movie is a sort of like a sequel, I think. The story in the movie follows a crew of mercenaries, lead by a war veteran captain named Mal, and their adventures after giving transport to a doctor and his telepathic sister River. The truth is that they actually escaped from the Universal Alliance, the ruling power of the known universe, so Mal gets more than what he bargained for when a deadly Operative of the alliance puts him and his crew in his crosshairs to retrieve River and terminate her for the knowledge that she carries.
The actor who played Mal in the movie (Nathan Fillion) seemed like a natural leading man for the big screen. He brought a lot of charisma and character into his role, and it was a big part of the movie. Of course, that hindered some of the screen time for the other characters (save River), but they got some significant parts so it wasn't a total loss. The action scenes with River were really sweet ass and made you cringe with every hit.
The special-effects were no joke either. It made the space battles nearly pop off the screen and had every right to be as good as Star Wars effects. Speaking of which, this movie really reminded me of the original Star Wars, in a way. Has that real cool-ness and intrigue to it.
Since I never watched the Firefly series, this was totally new to me, but I still found it to be a blast and I'm pretty sure JSD and the others did too. If you like sci-fi movies, this is a definite must-see. I might even buy the Firefly DVD. I actually can't wait for the sequal, or maybe even with the success of the movie it'll bring back the TV series... either way, I want more!
