It's Afterburn format this week, and not very many show up sadly. I went to try out my newly made and untested Evolution deck since the tourny isn't gonna count, and there was a Signing Appearance up for grabs.
Today's Participants:
Vince McMahon (JSD)
Eric Bischoff
The People's Champion
Rowdy Roddy Piper (RawManiac)
Torrie Wilson
Evolution
Round 1:
vs. The People's Champ
This Peep's Champ was an "experimental" Volley type, and since I was good ol' Heat I was worried. But luckily with the tech I set in the deck, he couldn't do much. Reversing the Volley maneuvers slowed me down a little, but I pulled out a clean victory.
Result: Pin 1-0
Round 2:
vs. Eric Bischoff
I got paired down?! Bleh, whatever. This Bischoff is pretty crazy with Slingshot Into the Ring Post, but he picked Test as his Enforcer which was kind of a bad move. I got through Sucker Punch, reversed his Karate Kick, and went aggro crazy with Military Slam and Asphixiator. A relatively easy match.
Result: Pin 2-0
Round 3:
vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper
Now this was the deck I really didn't want to play, but seeing how good it is (and that RawManiac was playing it) and how my deck has been winning, I guess it was inevitable. He blanks It's Getting Hot in Here with Piper's Pit, so his handsize is barely affected, and he starts playing action after action after action until I finally Cow him and simply get Sucker Punch through since Jimmy Hart can't touch it and I use my ability to get rid of Piper's Pit, since that card is dangerous against Heat decks. After that turn, he goes action crazy again, leaving me with barely any hand to work with. This goes on throughout the match, but one turning point was that he tried to Melina into a German Suplex, and I use Restricted Use into Headstrong, giving me enough fortitude for Leave Me Alone. I try to play Brave H, forgetting about his ability, as did he for about a minute, until finally realizing he can Two Things it, letting me draw 5 cards. After that I finally got to press maneuvers through and barely win the match with two cards left in Arsenal.
Result: Pin 3-0
Semi-Finals:
vs. Eric Bischoff
As it turns out, the strength of schedule let Eric through to the top 4, and this time he decided to use Steph against me. This was going to make things a little more difficult, but I managed to keep pushing my maneuvers through and win once again.
Result: Pin 4-0
Finals:
vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper
Can lightning strike twice? Well, I really wanted to win that Signing Appearance so I was praying that it would. I played my Pre-Match much differently this time so he would blank Backstage Shenadigans with Piper's Pit instead of It's Getting Hot in Here, lowering his handsize considerably. IMO, this was the eventual decision maker since he couldn't do much during the first few turns of the match, allowing me to chip away at his wall. Sucker Punch luckily showed itself early game and then I pressed my way through Jimmy Hart and Revolutions with Running Elbow Smash, dodging Once is Enough by playing different maneuvers and getting the pin.
Result: Pin 5-0
So I won the 6-man tournament and grabbed my first Signing Appearance, signed by none other than John Cena!! I was pretty damn happy, but Anthony wasn't as John Cena is one of his favorite wrestlers (sorry Anthony!). Meanwhile, this Evolution deck is running pretty well, so it is yet another choice for LCQ. In any case, until next week!
